The Bridal Trousseau

Pieces a mother folds in muslin and hands to her daughter.

A trousseau is not a shopping list; it is a wardrobe with a shape. The saris a bride will wear at her first Diwali in a new home, the gharara for a cousin's sangeet two years from now, the block-printed lehenga that works in the afternoon — planned together, so nothing repeats and nothing is missing.

Trousseau commissions at the atelier begin with a single long conversation: the cities you will live in, the occasions your year actually contains, the heirlooms you already own that deserve companions rather than replacements. From that, Surbhi plans a set — usually six to fourteen pieces — across silks, chiffons, and hand-embroidered occasion wear.

Every piece is made to measure and finished by hand in Jaipur, and each leaves the atelier folded in muslin, the way trousseaux have always travelled.

Questions, answered.

What does a bridal trousseau usually include?
A well-planned trousseau covers the first year of married life: two or three saris of real weight, a festive lehenga or gharara, lighter day sets, and one evening piece. We plan the exact list around your calendar — there is no fixed formula.
How far ahead should a trousseau commission begin?
Five to eight months before the wedding is ideal, since the pieces are sequenced around the bridal lehenga's own fittings. A trousseau can also be built in stages, with the essential pieces first and the rest following after the wedding.
Can heirloom saris or fabrics be worked into the trousseau?
Yes, and we encourage it. A grandmother's Banarasi can be re-bloused, re-bordered, or used as the starting point for a new piece. Heirlooms are continued here, not replaced.
Do you plan trousseaux for brides who live outside India?
Often. For brides settling abroad we weight the trousseau differently — more pieces that work at dinners and festive gatherings overseas, fabrics that travel and store well, and everything delivered by trusted courier wherever home will be.
